Traveling and plan on day hiking in and around huarez Peru.

I have a few questions, anyone who's been to Peru. My flight lands at 12 pm and my plan was to either rent a car and drive the 6 and a half hour drive to huarez from Lima. Although I don't know if I am able to drive that car to do day hikes out in the national park area to the east of huarez. Finding information is very hit or miss. I'm not into staying with your groups usually and much prefer traveling on my own. How does driving work in and around huarez. What are some of the best day hikes?
