Looking to own a pet

So I live in a basement unit, that is apart of a good size house. I can hear those above me but it’s not a huge issue. I want a puppy that’s not high maintenance and won’t make a lot of noise. I’m open to other pets as well (except a cat) but I mainly want a dog. I want him playful but again, the barking is what I’m afraid of. What breeds or pet species do you recommend?
