Does it make sense to rent a car in Italy?

My mother, sister(27f) and I(31m)will be going to a wedding near Laggio Maggiore, and plan to spend 8-10 days in the Italy/Europe. Our 3 main places we want to go from Laggio Maggiore are the Alps in Switzerland, Dolomites in the eastern side, and Rome.

Looking at the map, that might involve a lot of public transportation, or a hefty car rental. Does it make sense to rent a car from Milan, and drive both Switzerland and the Dolomites? A couple other options I thought of: 1. After the wedding, Road trip to Dolomites then to Venice, then fly to Rome.

  1. would be to spend a couple of days after the wedding near Laggio Maggiore, then go to Rome and rent a car and drive down to Naples and Amalfi coast.

Any recommendations? We're open to changing our itinerary, our focus is 65% nature and scenic hikes and 35% history.
