A Danish startup revolutionizing how sustainability data is managed in the hospitality, travel, and tourism sectors is streamlining the sustainability process for its members. By incorporating the Hotel Sustainability Basics (HSB) framework of the industry association into its platform, the startup is facilitating easier adoption and implementation.

This collaboration empowers the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) to enhance the scalability of its Hotel Sustainability Basics framework, thereby expanding its influence across the hospitality sector. Through consolidating pertinent data on the BeCause platform, the global association gains deeper insights into which hotels have embraced the framework and which ones require further support, enabling more effective advocacy for sustainable practices worldwide. Moreover, hotel management at the corporate level can monitor the progress of individual properties and offer necessary assistance to advance their sustainability endeavors.

“Sustainability is a priority for Travel & Tourism. Through the Hotel Sustainability Basics, the global hotel industry has come together to define 12 fundamental, globally aligned sustainability criteria that all hotels can and should implement as a bare minimum,” says WTTC President and CEO Julia Simpson.”Our goal is to have a globally recognized trademark that shows customers at a glance that a hotel is taking measures to improve its environmental performance while also supporting its local community. By joining forces with BeCause we are increasing the transparency of that process and giving hotel groups an effective and efficient way to put that tool into the hands of their properties.”

Greening Hotels: Embracing Sustainability

Hotels embarking on the journey towards sustainability through the HSB framework are given a timeframe of three years to fulfill its 12 criteria, encompassing sustainability benchmarks such as energy monitoring and linen recycling. Annually, they have the option to seek verification of their adherence to the Hotel Sustainability Basics (HSB) standards through accredited partners of the WTTC, namely Green Key and SGS. Upon successful verification, they are awarded a badge, emblematic of their commitment to eco-friendly practices, which can be prominently displayed across their branding, appealing to the growing segment of environmentally conscious guests.

In the forthcoming era, BeCause will further streamline this process by seamlessly transmitting data from its platform directly to the verification partners. Hotels already leveraging BeCause for their sustainability data management can effortlessly repurpose their existing data points for the HSB framework, eliminating redundant and manual efforts.

“Like any endeavor, the first step is always the hardest. While many hotels might have sustainability initiatives in place, they don’t necessarily track their data – or do so efficiently. By completing the HSB framework through BeCause and gaining greater insight into how their business activities impact the planet, we hope they will be encouraged to pursue even more ambitious sustainability measures in the future,” says BeCause CEO and Co-founder Frederik Steensgaard.

A Tailored Platform Driving Industry Efficiency

BeCause stands as a purpose-built, AI-driven hub designed to centralize a hotel’s sustainability data while streamlining its dissemination among various stakeholders, including travel and accommodation booking platforms and industry accreditation bodies. Upon inputting data into the BeCause platform, hotels can benefit from its automatic alignment with multiple frameworks, expediting the process of attaining voluntary green certifications and ensuring compliance with regulations.

To illustrate, European hotels can fulfill their reporting obligations mandated by the EU’s Corporate Social Responsibility Directive by capitalizing on the industry-specific features of the ESRS reporting framework, seamlessly integrated into the BeCause platform. This integration not only conserves substantial resources but also diminishes costs, underscoring the platform’s efficacy in enhancing operational efficiency within the industry.

“For a long time, hotels have lacked an efficient way to manage their sustainability data. They were constrained by manual processes that produced unreliable results, making it difficult to get buy-in from stakeholders on sustainability-focused projects,” Steensgaard adds. “We’re here to change that, whether you are a hotel just starting out and using Hotel Sustainability Basics as your guide or you already have several eco-certifications granted.”
