I travel light. I use a carry-on size bag or smaller back pack. I do not like fighting for space in the overhead bins. I prefer to check my bag and wait for it in baggage claim. I am now charged to check the bag. I do not understand this charge. If I did not check the bag I would have to lug the bag through security, hold on to it while waiting for the flight and fight for bin space.
I suggest that a passenger checking a carry-on size bag not be charged for checking the bag during check-in. Often I carry the bag through security and volunteer to check the bag when the gate agent ask to help reduce bin crowding. It is free if I lug the bag to the gate but I am charged at the ticket counter.
Suggestion: Carry-on sized bags should be checked for free at the ticket counter. A traveler should not be charged $40 for freeing up overhead bin space and being willing to wait for baggage.
