As excitement for the upcoming solar eclipse escalates, travelers are exploring RV rentals as a novel and adaptable way to stay. The RV Industry Association estimates that approximately 14.1 million Americans will use RVs for their eclipse adventures. RVshare, the premier network for RV owners and renters, reports a significant surge in reservations, with bookings increasing by nearly 660 percent compared to Memorial Day weekend 2024, marking the beginning of the RV and camping season. With many hotels and vacation rentals booked to capacity or charging premium rates, RVshare remains a viable option, offering ample availability in and around the eclipse’s path.

Particularly, states in the eclipse’s direct path, like Texas, Arkansas, and Pennsylvania, are witnessing booking increases of over 700 percent compared to the previous year. In Ohio, bookings have skyrocketed by 1,060 percent. Despite this high demand, RVshare assures that there are still thousands of rentals available, especially in prime viewing locations such as Texas—the first U.S. state to witness the eclipse—with additional options in states like Oklahoma, Missouri, Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

“Despite the increasing demand, there is still available inventory for those seeking to witness the solar eclipse from the comfort of an RV,” says RVshare CEO, Jon Gray. “Renters may have to get creative and increase their search parameters by adjusting filters to cover a larger mile radius to be able to view more inventory. It’s not too late to book accommodations for viewing the eclipse, but renters will want to book soon to have a wider range of options.”

While car rentals and hotels are becoming difficult for travelers to secure at this point, campgrounds are also an accommodation option offering a premium viewing experience. “Travelers who are still planning a trip to watch the eclipse have time, but they could have to be scrappy with their planning,” says RVshare Travel Expert, Maddi Bourgerie. “Consider renting RVs from cities outside the path like Houston or Louisville. Prospective renters can weed through available campgrounds on sites like Harvest Hosts or Hipcamp for alternative options.”

RVshare has also teamed up with Spot2Nite, a dedicated booking platform for campgrounds and RV parks, to offer ‘All-in-One’ packages, combining a campsite and a fully equipped RV delivered and set up for the renter. Spot2Nite currently has availability at 24 campgrounds along the eclipse path for the eclipse period, and 41 campgrounds are available for general RV parking on April 8-9 without a minimum stay requirement.

Furthermore, RVshare has launched an online guide for eclipse enthusiasts. This portal provides details on the path of totality, prime viewing cities, and available RV rentals, campgrounds, state parks, and eclipse-related events. It also offers tips for packing, family activities, state park camping, and compares the cost of RV travel with hotel stays, showcasing the potential savings of an RV journey for the eclipse event.
