Isle Of Skye

I'm in Glasgow and I wanna see the Isle of Skye, but what's the best way to get there? I was thinking of taking a train as close as I can then getting a taxi or something? I don't feel comfortable driving here at all and it's a tad too expensive for me to want to rent a car. Also do I HAVE to book a tour or can I just do my own thing? Google is no help with thos
