China Southern Airlines Expands Routes to Qatar Through Hamad International Airport

After the codeshare agreement between Qatar Airways and China Southern Airlines in February this year, Hamad International Airport (DOH) has announced the launch of four weekly flights from Guangzhou to Doha by China Southern Airlines, improving connectivity between China and Qatar.

Starting from April 22, 2024, this route is serviced by a Boeing B787-9 aircraft with 203 seats, operating from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) to Hamad International Airport (DOH). China Southern Airlines’ new offering complements Qatar Airways’ existing services to seven major Chinese cities – Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, and Xiamen, providing more than 27,000 weekly Seats available for flights to and from Doha via Hamad International Airport.
Being one of China’s largest carriers, China Southern Airlines operates approximately 3,000 flights daily to over 200 destinations worldwide. It becomes the second Chinese airline to join Hamad International Airport, following Xiamen Airlines, and is the fourth airline to begin operations at the airport in 2024, joining Akasa Air, Japan Airlines, and Garuda Indonesia.

Commenting on the new partnership, Sujata Suri, Senior Vice President of Finance and Procurement at Hamad International Airport, said: “China is one of our strategic markets and plays a crucial role in the aviation and tourism industry. The commencement of China Southern Airlines’ flights to Hamad International Airport will bolster tradelines between both countries, cater to the anticipated growth in traffic movement and offer better connectivity for millions of travelers. This partnership will strengthen our position in becoming the preferred hub to connect China with Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.”

The strong link between China and Qatar highlights the crucial role of reliable connections in meeting the rising demand for travel, which is expected to increase this year. The inclusion of China Southern Airlines in Hamad International Airport’s lineup is poised to boost tourism, strengthen trade ties, and enhance business relationships between the two nations.

As a vital player in global aviation, Hamad International Airport is committed to expanding and improving its network continually. The recent partnerships of the airport reflect Qatar’s commitment to enhancing its tourism sector in line with Qatar’s National Vision 2030, highlighting the importance of the airport’s innovative approach to air service development. Through pioneering initiatives in the aviation sector, the airport in Doha remains devoted to delivering exceptional experiences and unforgettable journeys for all travelers.
