We were originally thinking of doing Pompeii as a day trip from Rome, as many do. And I know that some "tours" even do Pompeii and Vesuvius on the same day as one tour. But that isn't really our style and not all of our group of 4 would want to hike up to the crater. (And my brother is a geologist and really wants to go to the crater.)
So we are thinking of taking 2 nights of our trip to stay in the area before the Rome portion of our trip.
Would you advise staying in one of the towns directly adjacent (Ercolano? Torre del Greco? Pompeii?) to be closer or Naples or Salerno or Sorrento? This would be late September/early October.
Our thinking looks something like:
day x: travel from Milan/lakes to Naples area (we will have spent about 5 nights in Switzerland)
night x: sleep ?
day x+1: Pompeii and open (spend as much time as we please at Pompeii and then do Herculaneum if we feel like it or just chill)
night x+1: sleep ?
day x+2: morning visit to Vesuvius; afternoon open...Naples or Sorrento/Amalfi?
night x+2: sleep ? and move on to Rome day OR move on to Rome in late afternoon/evening and sleep
