The Government of Canada, through the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, plays a pivotal role in connecting Canadians to our collective history. Each designation of a national historic person, place, or event enriches the diverse mosaic of our history and shapes our national identity.

Today, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change and the Minister responsible for Parks Canada, announced Mr. Bernard Thériault as the new Chair of the Board, representing New Brunswick. Furthermore, Minister Guilbeault appointed Stephen Azzi (Ontario), Harry Holman (Prince Edward Island), Valerie Korinek (Saskatchewan), and Jessica Kotierk (Nunavut) as provincial/territorial representatives.

Each board member brings a distinct and valuable perspective, enhancing the Board’s century-long efforts to honor the individuals, locations, and events that have defined Canadian history. Parks Canada and the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada are dedicated to ensuring that national historic designations accurately represent Canada’s diverse historical narratives. Together, they facilitate access to stories that showcase various voices, perspectives, and experiences, including those from challenging periods in our history.

Canadians cherish our shared past and understand the importance of historical awareness, both of the nation and of one another. Historical knowledge fosters engaged citizenship, enhances critical thinking, encourages civic duty, and cultivates a more inclusive society.

Established in 1919, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada advises the Minister of Environment and Climate Change and the Minister responsible for Parks Canada on matters of national historical significance. Parks Canada supports the Board by providing professional and administrative services, including conducting the historical and archaeological research necessary for evaluating nominations.

Together, Parks Canada and the Board ensure the recognition of nationally significant subjects, sharing these vital stories with the public through the National Program of Historical Commemoration.

“Canadians are diverse and so is our history. These new members bring their unique experience and passion for history and culture to the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. They join a group of knowledgeable individuals who care deeply about sharing the stories of our past for the benefit of Canadians today and for future generations. I look forward to the contributions these individuals will make to advancing the important work of the Board in commemorating the defining moments that have shaped history in Canada.”
