American Airlines is thrilled to unveil a significant initiative to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, France. On May 31, American will transport 70 World War II veterans to France on a chartered flight, generously donated, as a tribute to their invaluable service and sacrifice.

“We’re honored to play a part in helping this group of heroic veterans return to Normandy,” said David Seymour, American’s Chief Operating Officer and a veteran of the U.S. Army. “This special journey is not only an expression of our gratitude for these heroes and the sacrifices they made for our freedom, but we hope to help shine a light on their extraordinary stories and preserve their legacies for generations to come.”

The significance of D-Day in history is underscored by this upcoming journey, which underscores America’s enduring dedication to honoring veterans and preserving their legacies even 80 years later.

Among the distinguished veterans joining the expedition to Normandy is Felix Maurizio, a U.S. Navy veteran who manned a landing craft during the pivotal events of D-Day, including deploying troops onto Omaha Beach, among them his own brother, Sal, who served in an Army medical unit.

Also embarking on this meaningful trip is Frank Perry, an Army Air Corps veteran who served as a turret gunner in central Europe in March 1945. Recollecting the constant vigilance against enemy fighter aircraft, Perry pursued his passion for aviation after his military service, dedicating nearly four decades to Piedmont Airlines, one of the predecessors of today’s American Airlines.

The journey commences with a kickoff dinner at the American Airlines headquarters in Fort Worth, followed by a send-off parade at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport before the veterans board a chartered flight to Paris. In Paris, they will spend two days before proceeding to the Normandy region for commemorative events, including visits to significant historical sites, concerts, and special ceremonies honoring the valor and sacrifices of all who served during World War II. The journey culminates with a poignant ceremony on June 6 at the Normandy American Cemetery, the resting place of over 9,000 U.S. service members.

American Airlines, with its longstanding commitment to supporting veterans, has partnered with organizations such as TriWest Healthcare Alliance, Gary Sinise Foundation, Robert Irvine Foundation, and Old Glory Honor Flight for this historic endeavor.
