Concerned about vet after anal gland abcess

My 2 y/o spayed standard poodle developed an anal gland abscess that ruptured all within a day. She was taken to the vet first thing this morning who immediately recommended surgery with sutures and a drain. She gave us the option of medical management with flushing, topical and oral antibiotics which made more sense to me. If your dog dealt with similar did they jump to surgery after a glance? They also prescribed her amoxicillin (not amoxicillin-clavunate) and i’m concerned this isn’t a strong enough antibiotic. if your pet had this what antibiotic were they prescribed?
