8 days Italy trip, Rome Florence Venice

Hi, saw many posts asking to cover these 3 places in title within 8 full days... We have got 8 days excluding flights.. Can fly in to Rome or Milan... But looking at the number of places we feel we may not be able to cover all in these 3 cities.. So thinking may do just Rome and Florence... Saving Venice for some possible future trip... We are history and cultural buffs... And we realize we take our sweet time usually, especially in less crowded and peaceful places... Do you think it is a good plan, or adding Venice in still makes sense?
